Admission Possible Ripples
ripplewallquote_sm
This ripple image covers an entire wall of the Admission Possible conference room.

Our mission and culture extend beyond the Twin Cities' classrooms where juniors and seniors prepare for college. Admission Possible knows that our students, staff, and AmeriCorps members are taking the values and lessons they learned in our program out into the world. Admission Possible views this phenomenon as ripples, taking inspiration from a quote by Robert Kennedy (see right). Read examples of these ripple below. I am so grateful to have been an Admission Possible student! Looking back at my junior and senior years in high school and all the hard work that I put into the ACT, finding a college and scholarships is amazing. I never would have known about all the available scholarships (or have had the initiative) had it not been for the program and my amazing coach. Not to mention the resume work we did (which I knew nothing about up until then). What's even better, is that I am now passing the knowledge that I've gained from Admision Possible to my fellow peers and friends, so that they too can benefit from "free money" that comes from a simple essay. Thank You Admission Possible, for without you, many of us would not be at the college we are, or with the financial package that we have!

Admission Possible alumni enrolled at the College of St. Catherine gathered together recently as part of a special alumni event.  It was incredible to watch the students bond with one another and offer each other support and ideas for solutions to common problems.  Despite their busy schedules, many of the 18 students who attended the event were eager to meet again, and two of them volunteered to plan and organize regular on-campus gatherings.

I was stopped in the hallway at the end of the school day by one of North's guidance counselors.  He proudly exclaimed "All systems are go!  Keep up the hard work." At first, I wasn't sure what he meant, but he went on to explain how the combination of the Guidance Office, Project Success, Upward Bound, ETS, Admission Possible, and all other college prep programs at North has helped encourage more seniors at North to apply to college than any other year in the school's history.  This was not only a huge confidence boost but also a real sign that all of the great programs in our schools are making a difference.

This fall, I went up to Grand Casino - Hinckley to see the traveling Wheel of Fortune show.  After a long afternoon spent waiting, I was finally let in to see the show.  To my complete surprise, I was chosen as a contestant in the third round!  Once up on stage, I was asked the standard questions about myself.  The host seemed particularly interested when I said that I was an AmeriCorps* member completing a term of service at a non-profit called Admission Possible. “Admission Possible… what’s that?” he inquired.“It’s an organization that assists low-income students to prepare them for college,” I replied. The audience exploded into roaring applause, obviously enthused about our mission!

In early November 2005, a reporter from the New York Times interviewed me about my experience in Admission Possible.  Though his questions were at first about many different topics, he quickly focused them on my students' essays.  I let him read two different student essays, and he was astounded by how powerful their stories were.  In class, he interviewed these two students and obtained permission to quote parts of their essays in his article.  It just goes to show that all of the time and energy that goes into making these students share their stories pays off, not only by positively affecting their college applications, but by allowing their hard work and dedication to be celebrated in broader circles!

-Bidisha Bhattacharyya, 2004-2006 Admission Possible Coach at Roosevelt High School

We were at a campus visit from Macalester tonight, and the student panel included one of our former students, Kayoua, who is now in her first year at Mac.  The students were asked to talk about why they were at Macalester.  Kayoua said, "Well, I was in Admission Possible, and honestly, it's because of my coaches.  Both of my coaches went to Macalester and encouraged me to apply there.  They talked to me about whether they thought I could really fit in there, what it would be like as a non-white person, and helped me feel like I could make it at Mac." It was so gratifying to hear, and a great tribute to the dedication of Sev and Rinal during their two years at Highland Park High School!

Robert Kennedy, speaking in South Africa in 1966:
“It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped.  Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”  Click here to read a full PDF version of the speech.
