ADMISSION POSSIBLE SENIORS READY FOR ‘DECISION DAY’

ST. PAUL, Minn. – College-bound high school seniors nationwide have come to know May 1 as ‘decision day’ – the deadline by which students must accept or reject admissions and financial aid pending offers from colleges and universities.  While low-income students across the country will enter college at less than one-third the rate of their wealthier peers [Post Secondary Education Opportunity, June 2006], Admission Possible’s low-income seniors are proving why this does not have to be the case.

Of the 566 Twin Cities-area seniors participating in Admission Possible’s two-year college preparatory program, over 90 percent will find themselves approaching May 1 with competitive acceptance offers in hand from colleges and universities around the country.  Especially critical for students with financial need, these offers will regularly include financial aid packages that will be essential to making a college education a reality.

“For Admission Possible students, our program has been a two-year journey filled with challenge, excitement and anxiety about what the future might really bring,” said Jim McCorkell, founder and CEO of Admission Possible.  “Now Admission Possible seniors are seeing the payoff for all their hard work and appreciating how they have now set themselves up with choices for their future.”

“Senior year, I was still thinking I wasn’t going to get into college, but then I got into six of the seven colleges I applied to,” exclaimed an excited Lanaya Jones, a senior at Robbinsdale Cooper High School.  “Each time I finish one of my goals, I feel one step closer to college becoming a reality.”

Students worked hard all year at the urging of their Admission Possible coaches to get their college applications perfected and in early to multiple colleges and universities helping to ensure seniors would have options and that they would have them as soon as possible.  Completing financial aid information by early spring also positioned seniors well for receiving financial assistance package information along with college admissions acceptance letters.

“Our seniors worked overtime to apply for scholarships and finish the financial aid process, so that they could have as many options as possible as the deadline approaches,” said Jessica Rosenberg senior coach at Robbinsdale Cooper High School.

By spring break for Minneapolis and St. Paul school districts, 562 Admission Possible seniors had applied to at least one college or university and 84 percent had applied for some form of financial aid or scholarship assistance.

Since its founding in 2000, 98 percent of Admission Possible students have been admitted to college, and about 80 percent of those alums have graduated or are persisting toward graduation.
