Alumni Speak: What is your #1 goal for this year?
Adrianee Powell (Highland Park ‘04) University of St. Thomas
My goal this year is to balance being a new mother and a good student. I will be taking parenting classes and learning with other parents who attend school how to balance an infant and a school work load. By doing this I hope to be an effective parent and an effective student so I can graduate and pass the tradition of education on to my daughter.

My goal for this new year is to build a strong network and mentor relationship. By building and maintaining a strong network and mentor relationship with the right individuals, I will be encouraged to make appropriate decisions in my career and life. I plan to achieve this goal by going outside of my comfort zone, taking risks, and opening up myself to individuals who display genuine concern, take interest, and will be a positive influence in my life.

My goal above all else this school year is to gain research experience. I plan to reach this goal by focusing more of my leisure time on searching for potential research opportunities. I will use other resources such as my past professors, advisors, mentors, and my fellow students to see if they can help me out. As a psychology major, it would be beneficial for my resume to show that I actually have hands-on experience in my field.

Joal Reeves (Roosevelt ‘05) College of St. Benedict
My number one goal for the school year is to find balance. I always want to do everything and give my all, but this is not always possible. I think if I can find those things that will most influence my future and prioritize those activities, it will be okay to miss out on some other things because I will feel more fulfilled.
Pang Lee (Patrick Henry ‘04) University of Minnesota Twin Cities
My | | Pang Lee | number one goal for the new school year is to complete my HR internship working with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. I plan to achieve this goal by learning as much as I can and trying to gain as much hands on experience as I can. This plays into my overall life goals because it will give me the skills and the education to advance in my field of study, and all in all just allow me to do what I love to do most!
Amber Rickard (Roosevelt ‘05) University of St. Thomas
My number one goal this year is to find balance. It sounds a lot easier than it is! I am working on doing this by making sure to put time aside for myself at the end of the day, every day. Last semester, I allowed myself to burn out because I was so busy trying to be involved in everything, and I could hardly enjoy it. This | | Amber Rickard | semester I decided to focus my extracurricular involvement on fewer things so that I can dedicate myself more to what I am involved in and enjoy college
Christine Cha (Patrick Henry ‘03) Anoka Ramsey Community College
My number one goal for this school year is to better organize my study time. My plan to achieve this goal is to setup a time frame where I can meet with a study group and find time in between classes to do some early work assignments. This plays a big roll in my overall life because I work every night after school. So, I want to be able to understand my class | | Christine Cha | assignments and to study early on any test questions or quizzes that might just happen!
Charmaine Bell (Higher Ground Academy ‘07) Augsburg College
My number one goal for the new school year is to balance my social life with my work, both college and my job. I plan to achieve this goal by using my planner to the fullest. I will write down everything so that I am organized and well prepared for everything and anything. Even after college, balancing my social life with my work is a skill I will need in order to be successful so I think it is a great time to start practicing now.

Chee Lee (Arlington ‘05) St. Olaf College
My goal for this year is to do research. Last spring, I applied for a statistics research fellowship and received it. Right now I am doing research on Hmong speech in the Twin Cities and how it is being affected by the norm patterns of speech. I will also soon be applying for a January Internship at the Mayo Clinic. | | Chee Lee | This summer I hope to find a research opportunity at St. Olaf. I hope that these brief research projects will help me acquire skills that will help me succeed in grad school and my future jobs.
La Yang (Patrick Henry ‘07) College of St. Benedict
My number one goal for this year is to develop friendships among the students that attend my college by greeting them when passing by and opening my dormitory door to show them that I'm not a closed, up-tight person who wants their privacy. By doing this I'll feel more comfortable here at college, like it's my home, and won't be homesick.
Laura Lee (Patrick Henry ‘03) University of St. Thomas
My number one goal this semester is to be as organized as possible. This is the last semester of my college career, and I am overwhelmed with all sorts of things. I have my capstone course which revolves around a huge senior thesis paper. I have to host/anchor, write and produce stories for our campus television station. I have three other classes I have | | La Yang | to pass. I have to start putting resumes, tapes, and applications together for my soon to be job search. I have to make time for my family. I have to stay sane, all the while trying to enjoy the last semester of St. Thomas. Thus, as much as I look forward to walking in my St.Thomas cap and gown, I have to stay organized and get there first.
I plan to stay organized by taking each assignment as it comes. No procrastination! This will eliminate the stress of doing everything at the last minute...no one likes deadlines, and hectic, overloaded deadlines will not be acceptable. Oh, and of course detailed calendars at home and in my purse :)
Salma Hussein (Roosevelt ’07) University of | | Salma Hussein | Minnesota Twin Cities
My goal for this academic year is to get involved with student organizations that interest me, such as the Minnesota Future Doctors program. I intend to achieve this by doing well in my classes and being active in other pre-med organizations. This in turn will help me get closer to my goal of becoming a psychiatrist and helping the mentally ill, individuals who are looked down upon in many societies.
