Central High School’s academic program prepares students for college or work by offering challenging classes with strategies to learn critical thinking skills and creative problem solving. Central has three specialty areas: gifted/talented, performing arts and a Building Technology Academy. The gifted/talented specialty includes the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, a rigorous two-year, pre-university program for highly motivated students, which offers college credit, and the Humanities/Quest program, which focuses on advanced courses in English and social studies. In addition, the Advanced Placement and College in the Schools programs offer college credit opportunities for high school students. Central’s performing arts specialty includes acting, choir, recording, band, orchestra and media communication. The Building Technology Academy is a hands-on, experience-based program, which seeks to raise awareness of craft and management careers within the construction career field. The Teaching Career Academy, in partnership with the Hamline Center for Excellence in Urban Teaching and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, encourages and prepares students to consider and pursue a teaching career by providing a rigorous, standards-based academic program in addition to field experiences and links to post-secondary opportunities. Central, which stresses a "Learning to Learn" philosophy, also offers a full range of general classes and special education courses.
