On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Admission Possible AmeriCorps members and staff celebrated his life and legacy through service. In Milwaukee, staff and members completed a service project at Kathy's House, a hospital hospitality house. They cleaned the house from top to bottom and baked cookies for the patients staying at the house. It was a great opportunity for the team to engage in service outside their normal site as well as to take time to reflect on Dr. King's profound impact.
Admission Possible is a nonprofit organization working to make college admission possible for promising low-income high school students by providing them with free, intensive after-school programming including:
- ACT/SAT test preparation
- Intensive admissions and financial aid consulting
- Guidance in the transition to college
Admission Possible History
The organization began as a pilot program in the Twin Cities of Minnesota with 35 high school juniors in 2000 and has grown rapidly while achieving an impressive 98 percent college acceptance rate for participating students. The organization now operates in two geographic sites: the Greater Twin Cities and Greater Milwaukee metro areas, serving more than 1,540 low-income high school juniors and seniors in more than 20 partner high schools.
Admission Possible - Greater Milwaukee began operation in the fall of 2008 and currently serves 140 high school juniors and seniors at Milwaukee School of Languages, Saint Joan Antida High School, South Division High School, and W.E.B Du Bois High School. With community support in place, Admission Possible-Greater Milwaukee intends to grow to serve 400 students a year by 2012. We are currently in conversation with potential school partners and are working collaboratively with the other college preparatory programs in the Greater Milwaukee area to ensure support for the maximum number of low-income students possible each year.
