High school should be a place of exploration and preparation. At Highland Park Senior High School, students search, discuss, and discover new possibilities to prepare for life after high school. Like many proactive high schools across the United States, Highland Park Senior High is developing small learning communities. Educational studies show that few factors are as important to the success of a student as being known, cared about and encouraged by adults in the school and community. In order to foster those relationships, help more students reach high standards and help students learn more about the world after high school, Highland Senior High is organizing into four small learning communities and a ninth grade "bridge" community. The communities are Global Visions, Institute of Science and Technology, Health and Human Services and the Highland Center for Liberal Arts. Students will choose their community based on their interests. Each small learning community will feature a broad range of classes and internships that meet graduation requirements as well as college entrance standards. A variety of special programs and features will be woven in throughout all of the small learning communities.

Taylor Swartz and Monica Billy are Admission Possible's AmeriCorps Coaches at Highland Park High School, and Becky Adair is their Program Coordinator.
