Admission Possible is hiring AmeriCorps members for the 08-09 term

 

What do you remember most about your Admission Possible experience?  What have you learned in your college experience that you can pass on to other students?  Do you want to help other students get to college? 

 

This is your chance! Admission Possible is hiring AmeriCorps and VISTA positions for Fall 2008!  You know Admission Possible better than anybody, because you went through the program.  You know what it takes to be a good coach.  We are looking to hire lots of talented, idealistic people like you – young people passionate about doing their part to make a difference for future generations! 

 

We are excited each year by the quality applications we receive from all over, and with our recent recognition from the Princeton Review – we were one of only 100 companies or organizations selected from across the country for their 2008 Best Entry-Level Jobs recognition – we expect the competition for these positions to be especially strong this year! 

We will be hiring more than 40 new AmeriCorps and VISTA members to start in the fall.  The Priority Application deadline is 2/29/2008 and the Regular Application Deadline is 3/24/2008. 

 

Below is a description of the skills required for these positions:

  • College degree required. 
  • Strong interest in education, youth work, social services, or related fields. 
  • Comfort working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service and social justice.
  • Excellent leadership communication skills; outstanding organization and time management skills. 
  • Ability to multitask and handle potentially stressful situations calmly and appropriately. 
  • Ability to work independently and with others. 
  • Energy and creativity in working with young people. 
  • Strong commitment to public service and social justice. 
  • Access to reliable transportation required.
  • Teaching experience, college admissions knowledge, background in nonprofits, business or communications strongly desired (depending on position interest).

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is looking for college students to serve as tutors in high schools and middle schools throughout Saint Paul this spring semester.  AVID is a college preparatory program that assists students in the academic middle of their class by providing academic tutors and improving students study habits and organization skills.  AVID tutors are paid $10.00-13.50 an hour based on the classes they tutor.  AVID tutors also receive specialized training to be in the schools.  If you are looking for experience serving youth, or if you have a passion for giving back to the community, being an AVID tutor might be a great option for you.  If you would like to sign up for a training session, email Yi Vue at yi.vue@spps.org.

Become a high school tutor with Upward Bound

 

 Upward Bound is looking for after school tutors to assist high school students in five local high schools:  Edison, North, Patrick Henry, Roosevelt, and Highland Park.  This is a part time position (tutors can work a maximum of 20 hours a week) that pays $11.00/hour!!!  Students tutor twice a week in the schools in general subjects such as Math, English and Science.  Tutors are responsible for keeping accurate attendance, completing other paperwork, and attending monthly Upward Bound meetings for tutors.  This is an incredible, paid opportunity for both alums of these high schools who want to help students at their alma mater, and for anyone else who wants to give high school students the type of academic guidance that helped them get into college.
