Ubah Medical Academy (UMA) is a new independent, public charter high school serving grades 9-12 that opened Fall 2004.

UMA was created to provide all students with a rigorous academic high school education that will prepare them for college and the pursuit of medical and other meaningful careers in our community. Our vision is to provide a means for students, especially students from immigrant and refugee communities to prepare themselves for higher education and, eventually, careers in medicine or other professions in an environment that supports English Language Learners and sets high standards for academic achievement. In Somali, “ubah” means flower, and we intend to see young people grow into strong, productive, bi-cultural citizens who can walk in both worlds.

The impetus for UMA comes from the Metro Area’s rapidly growing East African community. At least 10,000 East African children and youth are currently in Minnesota’s K-12 public education system. The school founders have already created two highly successful schools for elementary and middle school students: the Twin Cities International Elementary School [TIES] and the Minnesota International Middle School [MIMS]. These schools are separate entities, but they are operated collaboratively and co-located near downtown Minneapolis. UMA is co-located with TIES/MIMS, and it has a close working relationship with the schools in order to serve students and parents most effectively.

UMA’s governing board is comprised of experienced educators and community leaders who bring expertise in many areas, including education, health care, and economic development.
