WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD?!  ADMISSION POSSIBLE WANTS YOU!

Nonprofit Kicks Off AmeriCorps Recruitment to Serve Low-Income Students

ST. PAUL (February 11, 2008) – Graduating college seniors looking for a job offering them the freedom to make an immediate impact in righting one of the nation’s greatest inequities – access to higher education – need look no further than Twin Cities-based nonprofit Admission Possible for opportunities.  The organization is recruiting now until March 24, 2008, for idealistic leaders who want to join a team of more than 40 full-time AmeriCorps members who, starting this fall will assist promising, low-income Twin Cities’ high school students who want to get into college, but lack the resources and experience to apply.

“Our AmeriCorps members have a life-changing impact on the group of juniors or seniors they serve throughout the school year,” said founder and CEO Jim McCorkell.  “Many return for a second year of service, and others go on to impressive grad school programs, move into teaching fellowships and programs like Teach For America, or move onto other meaningful professional opportunities.”

AmeriCorps members at Admission Possible serve in a variety of full-time roles, all tied to the mission of helping promising, low-income students earn admission to college.  Corps members serve as coaches, working directly with high school juniors and seniors in one of 16 public high schools in the Twin Cities area, or through the AmeriCorps*VISTA program in nonprofit capacity building roles such as volunteer organization and event planning, fundraising and communications, or alumni coordination.

Admission Possible corps members serve for one year at Admission Possible, from fall 2008 through summer 2009, through the support of the AmeriCorps and VISTA federal programs.  A living stipend provides for expenses during the year of service with the potential for an education award at the end of the term of service to assist with past or future education expenses.

“No matter where our AmeriCorps service members go after their Admission Possible experience, they remain alumni of this young, idealistic family of leaders who approach the world with a reinvigorated mission to provide equity in college access,” said McCorkell, who founded the organization based on his own experience as a low-income student in Minnesota.  “At Admission Possible, we envision a day when the future of America’s children is determined solely by their talent, motivation, and effort.”

Interested college graduates should apply directly to Admission Possible by completing an application, available online (www.AdmissionPossible.org); submitting a cover letter, resume, and unofficial college transcript; and participating with an Admission Possible staff member in a “dialogue” by telephone or in person.  Completed applications are accepted no later than March 24, 2008.  Early applicants may send in applications by February 29, 2008, for early consideration.  If accepted to the next round, applicants will be invited to interview at Admission Possible headquarters in St. Paul, Minn., in early-April.

Admission Possible is a nonprofit organization founded in Minnesota in 2000 and dedicated to helping promising low-income high school students prepare for and earn admission to college.  Admission Possible works to make college possible by providing their students with four free critical services: (1) ACT and SAT test preparation; (2) intensive assistance in preparing college applications; (3) help in obtaining financial aid; and (4) guidance in the transition to college. Admission Possible currently serves 1,200 students at 15 high schools in the metro area and will serve 1,300 students in 16 high schools during the 2008-09 academic year.  Admission Possible and its corps members have helped 98 percent of their students earn admission to college since the organization’s founding in 2000.
