Message from Admission Possible Leadership

This year brought exceptional growth and outstanding results for Admission Possible!  With a growing base of supporters, we moved aggressively to make college admission possible for an even greater number of promising, low-income students in the Greater Twin Cities this year and again produced outstanding results for these high school juniors and seniors through our year-long ACT test preparation and college and financial aid application assistance.

With the help of  a generous multi-year gift of $1.5 million from the William W. and Nadine M. McGuire Family Foundation, we entered year one of a three-year growth plan for the Greater Twin Cities.  In just one year, we grew rapidly from 600 students served to nearly 1,000 students in 13 high schools, putting us on track toward our goal of reaching 1,300 Twin Cities students in 2008-2009.

For seven years we have worked with our high school and university partners to deliver services that are changing lives.  Overall, 98% of our students have earned admission to college and nearly 80% of our students who enrolled are still working toward their college degree or have graduated.  This year, when 99% of our senior class earned admission to college, it brought to mind what Admission Possible graduating senior Prince Grear had learned for himself, "I think college means respect.  Everyone can respect you when you earn a higher degree.  You can get a career, not just a job."

These achievements for young people, along with our innovative program delivery through AmeriCorps service members, have earned recognition from across the country.  This year, Ashoka took note of our innovative social entrepreneurism and inducted Admission Possible founder and CEO Jim McCorkell into its international network of Askoka Fellows, placing Admission Possible on the map among the world's leading social entrepreneurs.  The Princeton Review chose Admission Possible as one of only 100 businesses or organizations in the country deserving of Best Entry-Level Jobs recognition.  General Electric tapped Admission Possible as a recipient of their first-ever Community Luminary Award, and the Minnesota Charity Review Council reviewed our operations and gave us their top seal of approval.

The sensational achievement of our students over time has convinced the Admission Possible Board to consider growing into other urban markets where lives could be changed by these additional resources.  As 2008-2009 approaches, our growth plans for the Twin Cities may include additional efforts across state lines to reach more students who deserve the opportunity to attend college and to change the future.
